Syllabus for M111

Policies for CALCULUS 111 and 112 Students

Calculus, which is the core of all your other courses in science and engineering is learned by working problems. It is vital that all problems be worked to gain the required mastery.

There will be three common exams during the semester. Two of the exams will be given before the drop deadline. The exams will be designed in such a manner that calculators will not be necessary. Therefore, no calculators or other aids will be permitted during the common exams or class quizzes. All common exams will be given during the student common hour.

The final grade will be determined by the common exams and the common final exam. The participation of the student in the class, grades in class quizzes and performance in the recitation section may be used by the instructor to raise or lower a final grade one-half letter.

Students will not be permitted to leave the common exams early. No make-up exams will be given. The grade for a missed common exam will be determined by the grade on the final exam and the judgment of the instructor.

If two common exams are missed, the student’s name will be submitted to the Dean of Freshman Studies for removal from the course.

If the final exam is missed, the student will receive a grade of  F or I depending on the judgment of the instructor.

If a student misses more than three classes before the drop deadline, the name of the student will be forwarded to the Dean of Freshman Studies with the recommendation that the student be dropped from the course.

The Learning Center is located in University Hall, Room 100. The hours of operation will be announced.

If you are having any difficulty you can consult with your instructor, your recitation instructor, or visit the Learning Center. All can be helpful.

The learning of calculus is a cumulative process which means that every assignment depends on understanding the previous ones. Remember that the way to learn calculus is to work all the problems, there are no shortcuts.

The day and evening sections of the common exams will be held on Wednesdays, Sept. 24, Oct. 22, and Nov. 19. The day sections’ common exam is from 4:15 - 5:30 PM. The evening sections’ common exam is from 5:45 - 7:00 PM. Upon completion of the evening common exams, the students whose class is on that Wednesday evening will report to their class at 7:15 PM. Rooms for the common exams will be assigned at a later date.
